They are coached at the beginning of their character design to join either the Alliance or the Horde and what those decisions will mean for them. Alliance characters are generally good in nature while the Horde are more villainous. Alliance characters are often attractive while Horde are monstrous and ugly. But each group has their own strengths and weaknesses. Most new players begin the game with an Alliance character because it feels more familiar.
