What Makes World of Warcraft So Amazing?
World of Warcraft is a game of many strengths and allures. One of the biggest allures is how addictive it is. It has elements to it that grab hold of you and tie you to your computer chair and refuse to let go until you complete your next quest. This game is a truly wondrous experience that has many people really hooked on the fantasy world of Azeroth.
While the company doesn’t release any statistics on players, many players tell of playing for long periods of time in a single sitting. The way this game pulls you in to such an immersive experience, it is not uncommon to hear of players playing through the night without noticing the passing of time. A typical player of online games might spend 24 hours a week online. World of Warcraft is so compelling, mesmerized players can spend up to 24 hours in a single sitting if the real world does not pull them back into the real world obligations.
World of Warcraft is an online game for multiple players, which has a social aspect that can add to the addictive nature of the game. People will stay on as long as their friends stay on, and often propel each other into new adventures and activities. Other MMORPGs that fail often do so because other people drop out of the game, leaving fewer to play with. World of Warcraft will not suffer from this problem by any stretch. This game has been continually popular since its launch and has only grown.
Because World of Warcraft is essentially a real-time game of endless adventure, there are fewer “break points” to conveniently end your game. It’s not like a TV show with commercial breaks and “continued next week in the next episode.” There is nothing in the game world itself to signal a clean break in the game. Even after completing a quest, there are often small tasks that need to be done to wrap things up, and often it is during these mundane tasks of reequipping your character, selling spoils of war, delivering items, and so on, that new quests are given to the character. Some of the plot hooks are very compelling and draw you right in, willing or not, to your next exciting adventure.
That is certainly a key point in this game. There is always something interesting to do, it can be difficult at times to find a good place to stop and let the real world back into your mind.
World of Warcraft is not simply a game, it is a fully functional alternate universe that your mind can enter and live in. With the constantly added content, new terrain, new players joining the game, it is fresh and interesting at every moment. For some players, it is a better world than their “real” one.
Being away from World of Warcraft can sometimes be stressful. How can that be? Is it really that addictive? Maybe, but one of the ways it is so worrisome, is that the game continues in real time while you are not playing it. It is not like you can just save your progress and pick up where you left off when you get back to your computer. There is no PAUSE function. Many players probably wish there was, because they can feel real angst over missing some things that go on in the magical world of Azeroth.
World of Warcraft was designed with a responsible feature I highly recommend you use. This feature will remind you as you are playing the game to take a break. This is great because it can help you snap out of the immersion long enough to realize that, indeed, your stomach hurts with hunger, or your dry throat is parched, or even all that dancing you have been doing in your chair is not because the combat was so wildly exciting (though that might have helped), but instead it is because you need to badly take a trip to the bathroom.
World of Warcraft also features controls that limit how long a person can play it. Parents ought to love that idea! Mom and Dad can set up schedules for play time on weekdays and weekends, and completely restrict access to the game during school hours. Sorry the game doesn’t come with a feature to make sure your child has finished all their homework, and it cannot allow access automatically by checking their grades before it lets them log in. But that is a great idea, right!
Engrossing as it is, it is a great game of great fun and social interaction. Adventures are compelling and tickle the imagination over and over again. Because it can be so enthralling, however, it’s nice to see that there are some tools in the game that can help you manage you kids time, and your own, spent on the game.
